FRESHERS FAQ'S

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EDINBURGH FRESHERS WEEK.

Freshers Week, often called Welcome Week, marks the beginning of university life and is one of the most exciting parts of the academic year. It’s when thousands of new students arrive in Edinburgh, move into accommodation and begin meeting the people they’ll live, study and socialise with throughout university.

Across Edinburgh’s universities, you’ll find a packed programme of welcome activities, Freshers Fairs, society events, campus tours, student socials and some of the city’s biggest Freshers events. It’s all designed to help you settle into university life, make new friends and feel at home before lectures properly begin.

Moving away from home can feel daunting, particularly if you don’t know anyone yet. That’s completely normal. Introduce yourself to your flatmates, get involved with activities in your accommodation and remember that nearly everyone else is looking to make friends too.

You’ll also meet plenty of people at Edinburgh Freshers Week events, whether you attend with new flatmates or head out on your own. Joining your university’s WhatsApp communities before moving in is another easy way to meet future course mates, neighbours and other first-year students. Once you’re ready, browse our Edinburgh Freshers Tickets section to start planning Edinburgh Freshers Week 2026.

Edinburgh Freshers Week 2026 takes place around the beginning of the new academic year, although exact arrival, enrolment and accommodation dates vary between each university.

Students from the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, Queen Margaret University and Heriot-Watt University may move into accommodation at slightly different times. Edinburgh Freshers events therefore take place across the main arrival period, giving students from each university plenty of opportunities to get involved.

If you’re moving into student accommodation, check your university’s official Welcome Week and move-in dates before making plans. It’s also worth checking whether any compulsory enrolment sessions, campus tours or course introductions clash with the events you want to attend.

Many students join their university WhatsApp communities before arriving so they can meet people, ask questions and organise Freshers plans in advance.

Once tickets are released, you’ll be able to browse the full Edinburgh Freshers Week 2026 schedule and choose the events that fit around your university timetable.

For many of the biggest events, yes. If you want to attend popular Edinburgh Freshers Events, including F*CK ME It’s Freshers, you’ll usually need to purchase a ticket in advance.

Edinburgh’s major student venues have limited capacities. Once an event reaches capacity, additional customers cannot be admitted. The only way to guarantee entry is with a valid ticket purchased in advance.

Buying your Edinburgh Freshers Tickets early also gives you access to the lowest available ticket tiers. Prices normally increase as each release sells out, and final-release tickets can cost more than double the original launch price.

Booking ahead means you’ll arrive in Edinburgh with your main Freshers plans organised rather than searching for last-minute events after moving in. If you don’t get into university, your ticket is refundable in accordance with our refund policy, giving you additional peace of mind when booking early.

All tickets linked from EdinburghFreshers.com are sold securely through our official ticketing partner, Fatsoma, and stored digitally in your account.

Edinburgh Freshers Week features a huge range of club nights, themed parties and student events, bringing together new arrivals from universities across the city.

One of the biggest and best-known Freshers brands is F*CK ME It’s Freshers, which takes place at The Liquid Room. The event has welcomed thousands of students across the UK and has become a popular Freshers Week tradition.

The Edinburgh edition is a large UV neon party packed with live performers, entertainers, inflatables, party games, free UV glowsticks and giveaways throughout the night. It brings together students from the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, Queen Margaret University and Heriot-Watt University.

As the main event in our Edinburgh Freshers programme, demand is normally high and tickets can sell out before the event date. Booking early gives you the best chance of securing the lowest ticket price and attending with your new flatmates or course mates.

Edinburgh Freshers events welcome students from universities across the city, making them a great opportunity to meet people beyond your own course, accommodation or campus.

Every year, a large proportion of attendees come from the University of Edinburgh, alongside students from Edinburgh Napier University, Queen Margaret University and Heriot-Watt University. Students from nearby colleges and other higher education providers may also attend eligible events.

One of the best things about Edinburgh Freshers Week is that it brings together students who might not otherwise meet through university alone. You can arrive with people from your halls and leave having met students from completely different campuses and courses.

If you’re moving to Edinburgh without knowing many people, joining your university’s WhatsApp communities beforehand can make a real difference. You’ll find applicant groups, course chats, accommodation communities and general university chats where students introduce themselves, ask questions and arrange to attend Edinburgh Freshers Events together.

Buying your Edinburgh Freshers Tickets is quick and straightforward. Browse the events listed on EdinburghFreshers.com, select the nights you’d like to attend and click the Buy Tickets button.

You’ll then be redirected to Fatsoma, our official ticketing partner, where you can complete your purchase securely. Once your booking has been confirmed, your ticket will be stored digitally in your Fatsoma account and can be accessed from your phone when you arrive at the venue.

Booking in advance allows you to organise your Freshers Week before moving to Edinburgh. It also makes planning with your new flatmates or course mates much easier because everyone can make sure they has tickets for the same events.

Many students use their university WhatsApp communities to decide which events to attend and arrange groups before Edinburgh Welcome Week begins.

Always check the date, venue and entry requirements shown on the Fatsoma listing before completing your purchase.

Yes. Edinburgh Freshers Events are generally open to anyone of university age, even if they aren’t studying at an Edinburgh university this year.

Students from other universities, colleges and surrounding areas often attend with friends. You may also be able to attend if you’re taking a gap year, studying elsewhere or visiting somebody who has moved to Edinburgh for university.

You must still meet the entry conditions shown on the individual event listing. Most nightclub events are strictly 18+, and everyone will need an accepted form of physical photo ID regardless of whether they are currently a student.

Freshers Week events are designed to bring people together, so you don’t need to attend one particular institution to join your friends. Provided the event allows general admission and you meet the venue’s rules, you’re welcome to attend.

Most Edinburgh Freshers Events are strictly 18+ because they take place in licensed venues that serve alcohol.

You’ll normally need to show valid physical UK Government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence, before entering the venue. Photographs, scans and photocopies of identification are not usually accepted.

If you won’t be 18 when Freshers Week begins, check the age requirement on each individual event before buying a ticket. Venue rules can differ, and purchasing a ticket does not override an event’s stated age restriction.

You’re still very welcome if you don’t drink alcohol. Many students attend for the music, entertainment and opportunity to meet people during their first weeks at university.

The two most important things to bring are your physical UK Government-issued photo ID and your ticket barcode.

Most venues require a valid passport or UK driving licence to verify your age. Digital photographs, scans and photocopies are generally not accepted, so make sure you bring the original document.

Your ticket barcode will be available through your Fatsoma account. Charge your phone before leaving, log into your account in advance and consider taking a screenshot of the ticket in case mobile reception is busy outside the venue.

It’s also sensible to wear comfortable clothing, carry a portable charger and arrange your journey home before the event begins. Edinburgh can be busy during Welcome Week, so checking your route and transport options before heading out can save time later.

Arriving prepared makes entry easier and gives you one less thing to worry about during your night.

Student safety is an important priority throughout Edinburgh Freshers Week. Events take place at established venues with professional event staff, licensed security teams, age-verification checks and entry procedures.

As with any busy night out, look after yourself and the people you’re attending with. Keep your phone charged, plan your journey home in advance, stay with friends where possible and never leave drinks unattended.

If you’re attending alone, don’t let that put you off. Thousands of students move to Edinburgh without an existing friendship group. Joining your university’s WhatsApp communities beforehand can help you find other students attending the same events.

Venue staff and security teams are there to help. Speak to them immediately if you feel uncomfortable, lose your friends or believe somebody may be at risk.

A little preparation goes a long way towards making your first Edinburgh Freshers Events enjoyable and stress-free.

One of the easiest ways to meet people before arriving is through the dedicated WhatsApp communities for Edinburgh universities.

Visit our Group Chats section, select your university and request to join the communities that match your course, accommodation or interests. There are chats for students attending the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, Queen Margaret University and Heriot-Watt University.

You’ll find new students introducing themselves, comparing accommodation, asking questions and organising plans before Welcome Week begins. Many people join weeks or even months before moving in, making arrival day feel much more familiar.

Students also use the chats to find others attending F*CK ME It’s Freshers and other Edinburgh Student Events, making it easier to organise groups before your first night out.

Please remember that these communities are intended to be respectful and welcoming spaces for students from every background.

Yes. Alongside the general university communities, there are dedicated course and accommodation WhatsApp chats for many Edinburgh students.

Accommodation groups can help you meet people living in the same halls or nearby buildings before you collect your keys. Course chats make it easier to find future classmates, compare enrolment information and ask questions before lectures begin.

Students also use the chats to arrange meet-ups, organise shopping trips and decide which Edinburgh Freshers Events they want to attend together.

If your particular course or accommodation group isn’t available immediately, check again later. More communities are usually added as student demand grows throughout the summer.

Joining early can make moving day feel far less intimidating because you may already recognise several names and faces by the time you arrive in Edinburgh.

Start with the essentials: important documents, suitable clothing, bedding, towels, toiletries, chargers, medication and the personal items you use regularly.

If you’re moving into self-catered accommodation, a few basic kitchen items can also be useful. Check what your halls already provide before buying everything, as storage space may be limited and your flatmates could bring the same items.

Edinburgh weather can change quickly, so bringing waterproof clothing, comfortable shoes and warmer layers is sensible even at the beginning of the academic year.

Don’t panic if you forget something. Edinburgh has plenty of supermarkets, pharmacies and shops where you can buy household and university essentials after moving in.

Preparing socially can be just as useful as packing. Joining your university’s WhatsApp communities gives you the opportunity to meet flatmates and course mates before arriving, while booking your Edinburgh Freshers Tickets early can help you avoid searching for last-minute plans.

Yes. Although Freshers Week mainly welcomes first-year students, many second and third year students attend Edinburgh Freshers Events too.

Returning students often come with friends, housemates, course mates or society members. Others attend after returning from a placement year, changing accommodation or simply wanting to celebrate the beginning of another academic year.

Provided you meet the venue’s age and entry requirements and hold a valid ticket, you can attend eligible events.

Freshers Week has a distinctive atmosphere because so many students arrive back in Edinburgh at the same time. It isn’t reserved exclusively for first years, and returning students often help newer arrivals feel more comfortable during their first nights out.

The best time to buy your Edinburgh Freshers Tickets is as soon as you’ve decided which events you’d like to attend.

Ticket prices normally increase as each release tier sells out. Students who book early therefore tend to pay considerably less, with final-release prices often exceeding double the original launch price. If you don’t get into university, your booking is refundable in accordance with our refund policy.

Edinburgh is one of the larger Freshers destinations in our event calendar, and the biggest events can sell out before Welcome Week begins. This is particularly relevant for F*CK ME It’s Freshers at The Liquid Room, which is the main event in our Edinburgh programme.

Buying early gives you the widest choice of events and makes it easier to coordinate plans with new flatmates and course mates before moving in.

All tickets linked from EdinburghFreshers.com are sold securely through Fatsoma. Once your events are booked, joining your university’s WhatsApp communities is the next useful step for meeting people and arranging who you’ll attend with.
